tea time

summer activities for preschoolers #5
(the fourth in a weekly series of ideas for families with preschoolers...please feel free to share your own!)

5. host a tea party. Invite a friend over and think tiny! Serve tiny treats: slice up fruit, cheese, little crackers, cookies, and candies in little dishes. We crack open individual packs of hot apple cider or hot chocolate and add semi-hot water from our children's sized tea pot.

4. break out the paint. Let your little Renior explore colors, shapes, sizes, dots, lines, and ideas
with fingers or a brush and paint. Or, draw Mary Poppins style by heading outside with sidewalk chalk.

taking turns

All your salvation wonders are on display in your trophy room.
Earth-Tamer, Ocean-Pourer, Mountain-Maker, Hill-Dresser, Muzzler of sea storm and wave crash.
Far and wide, they'll come to a stop, they'll stare in wonder.
Dawn and dusk take turns calling, "Come and worship."
Psalm 65:5-8, The Message

Where ever we find ourselves this weekend,
behind whatever things we see,
may we see Him
and may we enjoy Him!

carry

I will call to God;
God will help me.
At dusk, dawn, at noon I sigh
deep sighs - He hears, he rescues.
My life is well and whole, secure
in the middle of danger.
Pile your troubles on God's shoulders-
He'll carry your load, He'll help you out.
I trust in You.
Psalm 55:16-17, 22-23

May you find rest in Him this weekend, friends.

students

Observing these pictures of Camille, you will notice she's holding one stick in each hand: one rests on her shoulders while the other operates like a bow. Camille is playing her "violin" - a talent neither Erik or I possess. What has inspired this creativity outside the genetics and nurture of our immediate family? Without a doubt, the time Camille spent watching her extended family: the students who live at Ravencrest. It may be said that our children are students of the students.

Erik notes that he is a student - learning about dependence on Jesus, too- only he is sitting at a different kind of desk! While Erik's job title is "Business Manager", we feel that his "job" is just one aspect of life in this community. Living here at RC is so much more than a 9-5 job: it is sharing life with each other and growing together in dependence on the risen life of Christ.

Practically, our home is regularly open for students: having groups into our home for weekly meetings and individuals over for casual drop in visits or dinner. During their time here at Ravencrest, the students become a part of our family - believe me, they do not see a polished image of "family", but they see the realistic bedhead, diapers, communication, and dirty dishes of life: a family who needs Jesus! Living in community, the students observe the nitty gritty of our lives and hopefully surrender and dependence on the Lord Jesus for our daily needs as individuals.

Throughout the year, the students have taught, entertained, and inspired our children.

At the end of this week, those students graduate and return to their homes, lives, and study or work. We will miss them and are grateful for the year we've had with them. We - and our children - have learned from them.

And this week - as graduation approaches, I thought it would be an appropriate time to share a broader picture of the ministry our family is involved in. This week, watch for clips about Ravencrest and its mother organization called Torchbearers International, a preview to the film the Capernwray Story, and some words from the founder Major Thomas. Enjoy the week!

no more mr. nice guy

Our friends, the Jacksons, gave our girls the Princess Matching Game (a lovely version of the game Memory) at Christmas. While the girls learned the principle of the game, I was nice and let them win

That was, until recently.
Camille and I played.
Camille smoked me in princess matching.
26 to 13.
No more Mr. Nice Guy, kids.

Camille finds her favorite pair - Princess Bluebell.

My five meager matches, neatly arranged.

Camille's booty - she won so many she just tossed them haphazardly in her pile.

So if you ever play the Princess Matching game with Camille, please, as her mother, I'm asking you... show no pity to the wee three year old across the floor from you. She could school you. Hard.

enjoying some...

she is all that she appears.
funny, giggly, serious, thoughtful, spontaneous, playful,
friendly, spunky, loyal, loving, affectionate, active, passionate
her colors are true.

that's a wrap!

Places, everyone.

Aaannnd...ACTION!

Camille? Look up here, please.

and Catherine?

 That's it!

Now, where's that script? Ahh, Catherine has it.

Says we're supposed just to be sisters. We know about that!

And that's a wrap!

captions I: sleepover?

Camille: I like snuggling with Jude.
Jude: Thanks for the compliment.

Camille: Oh, I have an idea!
Jude: Which is...?

Camille: We can have a sleep over!
Jude: A sleepover?!

Camille: Just kidding... kind of.

Watch for it: More "CAPTIONS" to come.

practicing

Dear Granddaddy,

Although it won't be til spring when we see you in SC,
here we are,
practicing to help you out when we arrive!

Love, Catherine, Camille, and Jack

(Sarah's dad has a construction company
so the kids are pretty pumped about seeing our family and friends...
and of course all the machines!)

our little champion

If you know Camille, does it surprise you to learn that
her favorite breakfast cereal is...

Wheaties: the breakfast of champions
?

At three, our athlete already has a six pack. she's ripped. she's strong. she's focused. she's determined.

today's she's eating what's IN the box.
keep your eyes open: someday she may be ON the box.

geburtstag!!
to our Mimi, who turned three in September.
All our little athlete wanted was to go to the "rec center" (a fun water park in the valley). She LOVED her new swim goggles, especially now that she is holding her breath and blowing bubbles under water.
We love you, Camille!

squeaky...

...clean!

Catherine and Camille enjoy one of the main perks of moving to our new house...
having a bathtub!

Snapshots: Camille

In terms of catching up, I'd first like to give you some literal and figurative snapshots of the kids from over the summer.

Camille is going on three, this September 15.
She is every bit as full of life and fun as she looks, eager to make someone laugh by sporting a silly face, making a joke, or by laughing out loud (which is often enough to get someone else laughing).

Physically, Camille is a natural athlete - ripped in her chest, arms, and legs. She is liquid steel, beautiful to watch flowing over and around obstacles. Sliding down ropes, powering up onto swings, or balancing on rocks is no challenge for Mimi.
Socially, Camille knows people! She knows names, faces, and has inside jokes. She likes to know how people relate (Where's your mom? Who's your dad?) and remembers facts and details about their lives. I think my mom described Camille well, saying she has a "steel-trap mind"... not likely to forget emotions, details, and facts.

Mimi enjoys focusing on a project (stringing beads or sequencing blocks), running, climbing, "swimming", swinging, reading, and a good cuddle. When she's not "on", she can be found quietly with her stuffed monkey ("Monk") or reading a book.

5.6.11

get-well gang

When it comes to Jack's recovery, there's been no medicine like his sisters. They enter the room bringing joy, energy, and fun (read: normalcy) to each part of the day. Erik and I are so grateful for the part Catherine and Camille are playing during this time as they simply... are! Jack loves seeing them from each waking moment til he tucks in at night.

6.5.11

professionally candid

Erik and I tried to perform the role of professional photographers to get these Easter shots of Catherine, Camille, and Jack. I see now why they're called "professionals!" Getting three pairs of eyes, six hands, six feet, three heads, and three smiles to coordinate is no small task! At any rate, these pics brought smiles to our faces, and hopefully yours!

(soooo Camille, always ready to start a party!
and soooo Catherine, steady and ready to please.)

soooo glad God gave these girls to each other as sisters
